Understanding Medicare
Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed primarily for people aged 65 and older. However, it may also provide health care coverage for certain younger individuals with disabilities and people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Medicare has four main parts, including the following:
- Part A: Hospital insurance
- Part B: Medical insurance
- Part C: Medicare Advantage plans
- Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage
- Parts A and B make up Original Medicare and are required. Parts C and D are optional.
You can replace your Original Medicare coverage with an optional Medicare Advantage plan through private insurers. Medicare Advantage plans must provide the same health care coverage as Original Medicare; many offer additional coverage for things not covered by Medicare, such as foreign travel medical emergency care, vision care, hearing services and prescription drug coverage, depending on the plan you choose.
Insure-All Insurance Agency can help you compare Medicare Advantage quotes.
When to Enroll in Medicare
Medicare offers various enrollment periods, the most important being the initial enrollment period, which begins three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after your 65th birthday. There are also special enrollment periods for specific situations and the annual open enrollment period to make changes to your existing Medicare plans.
